Most of my childhood was spent in India – Calcutta and Darjeeling – speaking Hindi, Bengali, and Nepali, all these languages now locked in some part of my brain to which I’ve lost the key. Then school and University in Edinburgh and a drift southward to London, followed by immigration to Canada when the pyramidal promotion ladder stalled, and half our generation of young doctors left the UK.
An intensely busy working life in Oshawa, long hours, little sleep, three dear children, and a growing interest in birding. March Breaks were (surprise!) in Arizona, Costa Rica, Venezuela. Farther afield, I’ve travelled in Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, and most of South America.
For 14 years I was editor and co-publisher of Birders Journal, the only cross-Canada birding magazine, highly respected, but sadly discontinued in 2004. I still write regularly for several North American publications.
I moved to Cobourg in1998 and love it here.
Margaret, I must introduce you to my husband, a rabid birder. His collection of bird books threatens to crash through the floor boards. …Heidi
